e-culture: What's New, Coming in September
August 17, 2001
Welcome back, for those of you who are returning from vacation or to school, and welcome, for all those who recently asked to be included in our activities and communications.

What's New?
Cultural Resource Directory
We are creating a directory for community members to help them learn about cultural organizations and other great opportunities in Houston. We want artists and community organizations to take five minutes to complete an informational page, a sort of on-line index card. Send the information to listings@houstonculture.org.
http://www.houstonculture.org/listings
For help:

In addition to resource listings, please continue to send calendar items. We can promote them through the web site and, more importantly, inform KTRU listeners through the World Music Show, KTRU News and other specialty shows. If you know someone who would like to be the Calendar Editor, please send them our way.
Volunteer Director
Sahn Sanaphol will be seeking volunteers for various projects. We are not limited to the following ideas, but here are a few to think about:
1) Clean up a historic Native American mound site on Galveston Bay
2) Develop educational and interesting topics for the web site
3) Help organize a cultural magazine
4) Plan a social event and tour of the Haak Vineyards and Winery
5) Organize events and exhibits
6) Promote an educational camp for kids

As I mentioned, we are not limited to these ideas. We will hold a meeting in September to make more future plans, so be sure to let us know what you are most interested in.
Sahn will be contacting those of you who expressed an interest in volunteering. If you are a supporter of the organization and you or someone you know would like to volunteer, please send an email to sahn@houstonculture.org.

Photography Class
There are only a few spaces left for the September/October photography class. Since I will be out of town for the next two weeks, please direct any questions about the class to Sahn. Again, her email is sahn@houstonculture.org. The next class will begin in January.

Canyon Journal
I am preparing journals from various formal and informal trips we have made. I am starting with two journals from Copper Canyon. There will be at least six in the series later in the fall. The journals can be found on line at:
http://www.houstonculture.org/canyon
We organize travel for community members and we also get together informal trips for volunteers. Please let us know which destinations interest you most in the Southwest and Mexico.
Kilian and I are going to spend a week or two surveying ancient Anasazi ruin sites in Glen Canyon at the end of August. The new development is that we will be doing this from on the waters of Lake Powell, instead of our usual overland routes. The result will hopefully be kayak trips into the side canyons of Lake Powell to see ancient natural and man-made wonders, and trips into Seminole Canyon on the Texas-Mexico border by way of Amistad Reservoir. We also plan to follow stretches of the historic route of Cabeza de Vaca along the Gulf Coast. So, if you are a true adventurer and you are interested in history and culture, be sure to stay in touch with us about these upcoming trips.
When I return, I will let you know how Kilian, a favorite Houston musician to many, is enjoying life in the "Windy City" and in the windy mountains of Coloardo.
