Houston Institute for Culture will resume its activities on Wednesday, September 28, 2005. The Afghan Women's Project photography exhibit will be extended to Sunday, October 9. Peggy Kelsey's talk and the showing of the film "Who's Counting? Marilyn Waring on Sex, Lies, and Global Economics" will take place on Wednesday and Thursday, October 5 and 6, at 6:30pm.

These activities are free. Hours for the Afghan Women's Project photography exhibit are W-F, 4-8pm, and Weekends, 2-8pm.

Houston Institute Fall 2005 Schedule

Camp Dos Cabezas

We will hold a Camp Dos Cabezas volunteer meeting on Monday, October 10, at 1:00pm. The meeting will take place at Houston Institute for Culture, 5555 Morningside, Suite 204, Houston, Texas, 77005. We are located between Rice Blvd and University Blvd, upstairs from Brian O'Neill's Restaurant. Parking is on the left side of the building.

Educational Exhibit: Day of the Dead Altars

October 15 - November 6, 2005, W-F, 4-8pm; Weekend, 2-8pm We present two altars for the Mexican traditional celebration of El dia de los muertos (the Day of the Dead), one featuring Mexican-American labor activist Emma Tenayuca and the other remembering women of the Lower Rio Grande Valley who have been victims of increasing violence on the US-Mexico border. In addition to the altars, educational materials and information about regional Day of the Dead activities will be available.

*Donations are accepted for people who live in unincorporated communities (colonias) on the Texas-Mexico border. They need essential items like food and water. They need clothing and shoes to send their children to school, as well as toothbrushes and toothpaste, and common over-the-counter medications (which will not expire for at least six months). Digital Storytelling Workshops and Photography Classes

The Photography Class scheduled for October 3 and 10 will be cancelled to make time for volunteer work in Louisiana. The Photography Class on November 7 and 14 is still planned. For more information, please see:

The Digital Storytelling Preparation Workshop scheduled on November 9, from 6 to 8pm will be offered for free. Call 713-521-3686, or email info@houstonculture.org to learn more. We will emphasize "Telling the Story of Louisiana."

Seeking Volunteer for Louisiana Project

We are preparing to track the recovery status of cultural resources in New Orleans and southeast Louisiana Parishes. This project is in response to the destruction left by Hurricane Katrina. We may expand the project in response to the damage caused by Hurricane Rita in southwest Louisiana and southeast Texas. Office Reopens for Organizations

Following our closure due to Hurricane Rita, non-profit organizations may resume holding their meetings in our Rice Village office on Wednesday, September 28. Organization representatives may also come by during the Afghan Women's Project photography exhibit (W-F, 4-8pm, and Weekends, 2-8pm) to learn more.

Houston Bioneers Film Screenings at Houston Institute for Culture

Volunteers from Texas Bioneers in co-operation with Houston Institute for Culture will present two compelling and engaging documentaries.

The recent Katrina and Rita disasters have made more urgent the issue of food, fuel, humanity and the future. Join us to explore the revolution happening in farm fields and learn what you can do about skyrocketing energy prices. Both films will be preceded with a 10 minute taste of upcoming Texas Bioneers Conference at St. Thomas University. Texas Bioneers is committed to improving the environment by changing the world.
