Argentina - Hope in Hard Times

"¡Que se vayan todos!" Chants echo off the skyscrapers, burst through the plazas, and clamor down the streets of Buenos Aires. "Throw them all out!" shout legions of frustrated Argentine housewives, students and lawyers, weaving their way through the city one summer evening, banging on pots and pans. What would you do if you lost your job, they closed the banks so you couldn't access your savings, and the government seemed unable to help? In Argentina they stormed supermarkets for food; the police gunned down 30 people in just one day. But what happened next was truly extraordinary.

In the face of economic collapse, the Argentine people rescued themselves. The documentary film "Argentina - Hope in Hard Times" by Mark Dworkin and Melissa Young provides a hopeful example for all of us.

"Argentina - Hope in Hard Times" will be showing on Monday, February 21, at University of St. Thomas Anderson Auditorium. Anderson Auditorium is located in Anderson Hall, near the Chapel of St. Basil. The film starts at 7:00pm.

The free screening is presented by Houston Institute for Culture and the Department of Modern and Classical Languages at the University of St. Thomas, with Globalization Forum and Globalization Working Group.

Howard Zinn - You Can't Be Neutral...

Howard Zinn: You Can't Be Neutral on a Moving Train

"Howard Zinn: You Can't Be Neutral on a Moving Train" documents the life and times of the historian, activist, and author of the best selling classic "A People's History of the United States". Featuring rare archival materials and interviews with Howard Zinn as well as colleagues and friends including Noam Chomsky, Marian Wright Edelman, Daniel Ellsberg, Tom Hayden and Alice Walker. The film captures the essence of this activist and thinker who has been a catalyst for progressive change for more than 60 years. Noam Chomsky noted, "It is no exaggeration to say he has changed the consciousness of a generation."

In celebration of Black History month there will be a special post-movie panel discussion on Friday night covering the topic "Civil Rights: Then and Now". A donation of $5 to $10 is appreciated, but no one will be turned away.

Blackboard Bungle Curated by Skip Elsheimer, A/V Geeks

Returning to Aurora for the sixth time, our favorite classroom clown, Skip Elsheimer, brings a few more 16mm film reels to remember. A/V Geeks present an evening of old school films about--interestingly enough--the hazards of going to school in the 1960s and 70s. Films include: Our Obligation, Lunchroom Manners, How Quiet Helps at School, And Then It Happened and more! As always, each screening begins with Skip's ceremonial filmstrip read-a-long on a subject selected by the audience, so bring your monocle.
