e-culture: e-culture: Educational Travel and Documentary Workshops
October 09, 2004

New expressions of New York and old traditions of Mexico;
Navajo Code Talkers and Tarahumara runners;
Ancient cities newly discovered and modern celebrations older than the U.S.;
The Zuni Trail and the Santa Fe Railroad;
5,000-year-old canoes and five million-year-old volcanoes;
Spanish missions and Tibetan monasteries of New Mexico;
Slave ships and social struggles;
Tiny tiendas and industry giants.

Our travel adventures take us to the most amazing places and bring us the best opportunities for learning.

On Monday we will look at one of our favorite destinations - the Colorado Plateau. It's the land of the Anasazi, the Ute, Escalante and Dominguez, the Mormons, Kit Carson and John Wesley Powell. When Brigham Young looked down into the Salt Lake Valley, he reportedly said, "This is the place," and the Mormons settled there. When Ebenezer Bryce looked out across the pinnacles and mesas of southern Utah, he said, "This is a hell of a place to lose a cow." Scarce people populated this spectacular region that includes ancient ruins, pioneer sites and great expanses of protected National Park lands. The few who did brought with them an interesting social fabric so rarely described by Elizabeth Forster and Edward Abbey.

On some of our adventures we offer photography workshops or produce documentary projects. If it interests you, please come and see why the Wall Street Journal featured our photography and video workshops in its weekend section.

A FOUR DIRECTIONS PHOTOGRAPHY WORKSHOP

In one of the most dynamic settings in the United States we will hold a workshop on travel and landscape photography. The November 20-28 outing will take us to the Canyonlands and desert Southwest. If you would like to know more about this or any other upcoming adventures, please try to attend the free presentation at REI listed above.
