GENE GENIES
Curated by Steve Seid
Saturday, December 6, 8:00pm and Sunday, December 7, 3:00pm
Steve Seid in person!
Our fascination with Man's essential components--his genetic makeup--has been driven by dual desires: the quest to understand our true nature, and the quest to gain power over it. Artists as cultural diviners have had much to say about this pursuit and its sometimes alarming implications. The irreverent works in this program look at provocative issues such as cloning, eugenics, and the manipulation of nature with critical wit, but most poignantly, at the exploitation of our genomic identities. Is there anything to be proven here? Perhaps that we've at least located the gene for visual creativity.

Steve Seid is the Video Curator at the Pacific Film Archive in Berkeley, California. He is the co-author of the forthcoming book Ant Farm 1968-1978 (University of California Press, February 2004). Steve is inviting everyone to swim in his gene pool after the screening.

VALIENTE: The First Annual Courage Award Dinner Honoring writer Ruben Martinez
Presented by Voices Breaking Boundaries

Starting December 2003, VBB initiates a new tradition of honoring artists whose art reflects their passion and commitment to incite social change. This award, entitled The Courage Award will honor local, national and international artists and will be renamed in different languages.

VBB's first Courage award, named VALIENTE, will be presented to Ruben Martinez, an Emmy Award-winning journalist, poet and performer. Martinez blazes the trail for artists by breaking into mainstream publishing, radio broadcast, print journalism and academia without compromising his vision and voice. He continues to produce work that challenges stereotypes and sheds light on social issues such as immigration, government control, and teenage gang violence.

The evening includes a cocktail reception with performances by Youth Advocates, Ruben Martinez & Raj Mankad, pinoy rock music by Kayumanggi, and seated dinner prepared by VBB's culinary artist Nusrat Malik, and an award ceremony hosted by VBB's Artistic Director Sehba Sarwar and Project Row Houses Founding Director, Rick Lowe. The proceeds from the event will benefit VBB in its efforts to work towards social change through art.

Monday, December 8, 2003, 6:00 - 9:00pm
The Eldorado Ballroom
2310 Elgin (the corner of Elgin & Dowling Street)
Houston, Texas

Individual tickets starting at $75

Fiesta Guadalupana

On Friday, December 12, 2003, MECA will celebrate the Feast Day of Our Lady of Guadalupe with Fiesta Guadalupana. The Virgin de Guadalupe is fondly thought of as the Roman Catholic patroness of the Americas. The historical basis of this holiday is the belief that in 1531, on Tepeyac hill, the Virgin Mary appeared to Juan Diego, a poor Native Mexican. Her shrine in Mexico City is the second most-visited Catholic Church in the world with approximately 10 million visitors a year. Pope John Paul II visited Our Lady of Guadalupe three times, most recently in 2002, for the canonization of Juan Diego, who convinced the bishop to build a Marian shrine on Tepeyac.

MECA will celebrate this Latin American holiday with song and dance. Mariachi MECA will lead participants in a procession around the Old Sixth Ward while singing Las Mananitas. The procession will conclude at MECA's statue of the Virgin de Guadalupe, where MECA's Ballet Folklorico students will perform a traditional Aztec dance, Sun God's Adoration. Mariachi MECA will perform liturgical music, as a student representing Juan Diego lays flowers before the statue of Our Lady. Hot chocolate, pan dulce, and other refreshments will be available for purchase.

Friday, December 12, 7:00pm
