e-culture: D.L. Hughley on the Titanic, Hispano Folk Music on KTRU
May 19, 2003

The current e-culture newsletter can be found on line at:
http://www.houstonculture.org/feature

"Oh, boo hoo! Some white folks had a bad boat ride!" African American comedian D.L. Hughley offered his perspective on "Titanic," a film about a British luxury liner that sank in the Atlantic Ocean. In the next e-culture newsletter we will consider the value of our cultural experience and our responsibility to understand the cultural experience of others.

The Memorial Day edition of e-culture will be the last one for the summer. We have a variety of educational programs and travel activities, so we may send one or two brief reminders in June and July. A tremendous amount of new feature materials and documentary projects will be developed on line over the summer, so please stay tuned to www.HoustonCulture.org.

African American and Hispano Folk Music on KTRU Tonight

Be sure to tune in tonight for several rare compilations of music that comes from the heart of distinctive American cultures on KTRU, 91.7 FM.

We will present an informative arrangement of Indigenous and Hispano Folk Music of the Rio Grande del Norte compiled from the Museum of New Mexico, University of New Mexico, and Smithsonian archives, and other sources tonight at 7pm on the World Music Show. In addition, we will hear a Navajo folk tale, "Who Wants to Be a Prairie Dog?," and the music of legendary Houston Tejano singer and guitarist Lydia Mendoza.

Tonight on the Americana Show from 9 to 10pm we will present "Triumph and Tragedy: African American songs of Joy and Sorrow." This musical survey will explore a wide range of African American music, from historic Prison Blues, Civil Rights protests and Southern Gospel to the sounds of New Orleans Brass Bands and Washington D.C. Go-Go Funk.

These series, briefly rendering the Indian and Hispanic experience in New Mexico and the African American experience in the South, will be educational and moving. The Navajo folk tale, scheduled for the second hour of World Music, will be fun for children and adults. If you haven't heard the music of the pioneer Houston artist Lydia Mendoza, also scheduled for the second hour of World Music, you have missed one of Houston's great legacies. Please take advantage of these unique educational broadcasts.

The Last General Interest Meeting of the Spring

We will hold our last General Interest Meeting before taking a summer break on Tuesday, May 20, at 7:30pm. The meeting will be held at Fadi's Mediterranean Grill, 4738 Beechnut at Loop 610 in Meyerland. These meetings are informal and offer a great opportunity to learn how to get involved in our educational programs and travel.

We are always looking for volunteers. We currently need section editors, radio producers, a team or writers and editors for several important projects, and most of all, a newsletter editor to take over in the fall. You can come to the meeting for any reason (to try a new restaurant even). For specific meeting information and current agenda items, please see:
http://www.houstonculture.org/meeting

Board Member Nominations:
We will be seeking nominations for two open board positions later this summer. Board members must be concerned with cultural issues and the mission of the organization, and should be ready to invest time and energy in the organization. If you are interested, please visit with me at the upcoming General Interest Meeting on May 20, or stay tuned for more information in our newsletter.

In helping children learn and stay motivated for school, two heads are better than one. And when offering kids the adventure of a lifetime at Camp Dos Cabezas, many participants are needed. If you would like to be involved in our cultural and educational youth camp, please contact me as soon as possible with a general idea of your availability for a meeting to be held in early to mid June, so I can announce the meeting information in the Memorial Day newsletter.
