Some months in Texas are better than others. This isn't just a factor of our volatile weather here on the Gulf Coast. It is the diverse cultural experience that improves our quality of life during months like September, when polka and Tejano bands take the stage at Westfest and we celebrate Mexican Independence on the 16th of September. And October, when people from all over the state gather for Czhilispiel, cultural festivals from the Sabine to the Llano River, and the Asian American Festival in Houston. March and April are special: The Bluebonnets, Indian Paint Brushes and Azaleas bloom; International festivals spring up in San Antonio, Houston, Lafayette and New Orleans; And, Europeans and Americans flock to North Texas for Bob Wills Day.
February offers a lot of everything: We further our education during Black History Month; Beautiful Whooping Cranes struggle for survival on the Gulf Coast; The George Washington Birthday Celebration and Jalapeno Festival attracts vast audiences to Laredo; The Chinese New Year and Tet Festivals are celebrated in major Texas cities; Majestic horses parade down Houston's Main Street as the historic trail riders arrive from as far away as Shreveport, Louisiana and the Rio Grande Valley; We even go to the best parties in the world as revelers at Mardi Gras in Mamou, New Orleans and Galveston.
This year, Mark and the gang are off to explore Carnaval in Veracruz, where they will follow the route of Cortes and Cabeza de Vaca between the historic port and Mexico City to prepare for the Virtual Classroom. Stay tuned for that in the next issue.
This week, our coverboy is a horse, for the Year of the Horse, and for the rodeo parade, Black cowboys and rural Mardi Gras!
There are many timely events in this edition. Please support some of these great efforts.
