I apologize for the increased frequency of the newsletter. There are many valuable activities this time of year. You should see only two more updates between now and the start of the slow summer, when we will be out traveling. Please use the links below to get more information on subjects that interest you.

Youth Education Camp

At our next meeting, April 2 at Jax Grill, there will be a short presentation on Camp Dos Cabezas, our planned Cultural Crossroads Youth Education Program. Camp Dos Cabezas will pair mentors with deserving youth for a one-week exploration of America's diverse culture and history in southeast Arizona. Several organizations have expressed interest in this educational summer camp.

At the March 5 meeting it was decided that this was clearly our most exciting new program. If you are interested in youth education, you should attend the next meeting to learn how this program will work. The meeting will be a social occasion so come early and order an item or two from the reasonably priced menu and stay as long as you like.

General Interest Meeting
Monday, April 2, 7:00pm
Jax Grill, 1613 Shepherd Drive

Upcoming Events

Please support these cultural performing arts events in Houston, and tell others about them. The Japanese Classical Dance event takes place Sunday (tomorrow) and will offer a rare opportunity to see extremely high caliber talent perform in the U.S. If you are just finding out about the event, please try to spread the word. Those who saw the Houston Grand Taiko festival last October know to expect a very professional production.

Featured Traditions

Anna Maria Chupa has been so kind to share with us her research and experience with St. Joseph's Day altars, a tradition brought to New Orleans by Sicilian immigrants. St. Joseph's Day is March 19.

If you are in New Orleans around St Joseph's Day, you may find processions of Black Indians. You may even be fortunate to witness Super Sunday Showdown.

Next month: Pilgrimage to Chimayo

Publication

Those interested in helping produce a magazine should contact me as soon as possible. Monika Hallqvist, with her stacks and piles of awards, is going to advise us. The focus will be regional cultural arts, music, events and traditions. We will be meeting next week at a neighborhood restaurant, so please join us.

Photography Class

If you are still trying to decide whether to take one hour a week for eight weeks to learn more about lighting, keep in mind that the deadline is March 20. I'm not doing this for my benefit -- my photographs are already in the Kennedy Center archives. I'm hoping to help community artists create visual materials suitable for publication or broadcast. The class would be helpful for anyone wanting to learn more about lighting to document their artwork, or a summer trip, or an important topical issue. Technical aspects of lighting will be covered more thoroughly than in college courses. 100% of the fees will go to educational workshops and lectures by artists.

Please Stand By

Believe it or not, we actually are in the process of moving to our new domain -- houstonculture.org. The new server will be much faster. Also, office resources, such as minutes from the last meeting, are on line in a password-protected folder.

Educational Travel

The next trip will be in late May and it will feature aspects of Native American and Spanish history in New Mexico and Colorado.

Media News

We are working on a recorded Public Service Announcement. If you have an interest in helping with this, please let me know. And for our next TV or radio opportunity, Maria Fonseca, who has substantial on-air experience, will be our spokesperson. Camp Dos Cabezas may merit some coverage and we want to be prepared.
