Houston Institute for Culture youth education programs promote scholarship, media literacy, cross-cultural experience, environmental stewardship, civic engagement and community leadership. Programs are offered in a variety of formats, including in-school and after-school programs, weekend workshops and camps. Programs are available for all ages and grade levels. Houston Institute for Culture receives support from the Harris County Department of Education (CASE), Texas Commission on the Arts and National Endowment for the Arts. Literal-Latin American Voices journal is a sponsor of our youth programs. Additional support is provided by the University of Houston's College of Education, the Artery Media Project and many generous individuals, small businesses and foundations.
Writing and Media Production
Through a partnership with Kids Write to Know, HIFC provides topical writing workshops, where students learn about history, culture and environment. HIFC digital storytelling programs focus on narrative and script writing, concept development and achieving high quality standards. They include "Media Makers" (with emphasis on digital production and application), "Youth Voices" (concept development, empowerment and media literacy), and "From Digital Photographer to Digital Storyteller" (creating stories and building vocabulary from visual art).
Civics and Economic Literacy
Houston Institute for Culture develops student projects that inspire civic engagement and community responsibility. Our model project, "Students for a Better Houston" is "a serious-minded student organization dedicated to making Houston a better place for future generations." Students implement their visions for community betterment.
Health and Nutrition
Kids Write to Know presents half-day workshops on health and nutrition by coordinating activities with local health advocates and experts. The program combines good study habits, note taking, writing and art to engage students in healthy living, while helping them understand how healthy eating and sleeping habits help their academic skills.
Environmental Education
Kids Write to Know and HIFC provide a variety of environmental education programs in partnership with local city agencies and university departments. Environmental awareness and safety is an important component of our "Students for a Better Houston" program. Programs also promote environmental stewardship and recycling through hands-on outdoor activities, as well as writing and art.
Culture and Traditional Arts
HIFC offers in-school and after-school workshops and demonstrations by area traditional musicians and dancers. Popular presentations include Danza Azteca, pre-Hispanic Mexican dance, and accordion, played in Creole and Conjunto styles. Local authors and university faculty may be available to accompany the musicians or dancers.
Camp Dos Cabezas
The educational youth camp "provides children from at-risk communities with the experience of a lifetime to help them achieve success in their lives." Students learn the process to apply for a scholarship to attend the camp. Learn More
