The Pinoy Rock Stage of the Asian American Festival, 2001
Saturday, October 20 from 5:45 to 9:30 pm:
8:45 pm - Joey Ayala
The Pinoy Rock Stage features a special performance of Joey Ayala from Davao
City, Philippines. The prolific singer-songwriter, poet, story-teller,
artist, ecology campaigner and internationally acclaimed ethnomusic performer
has won numerous awards for his work, which includes six albums, and is
destined to become a Filipino national treasure. Last year, Joey was bestowed
with the Datu Bago Award from The City of Davao, "for being an outstanding
composer-performer-bandleader-lyricist, arranger, writer who has defined the
ethnic character of Mindanao music that he renders magnificently well using
his voice and indigenous instruments resulting in the consciousness of the
Filipino soul, of intimations of its moral values and environmental
responsibilities." The Pinoy Rock Stage of the Asian American Festival offers
a rare opportunity to see Joey Ayala for the first time in Texas, taking a
break from his year-long tenure as the Director of Pusod, an environmental
and educational resource center in Berkeley, California.
8:15 pm - Bobby Banduria
With two cds released and consistently playing to packed houses in their Bay
Area base, this will be Bobby Banduria's Texas premiere. Should one dare to
define the "Fil-Am sound," one would be hard-pressed to find anything closer
to it than Bobby Banduria. Musically as diverse as the 7100 islands of the
Philippines, Bobby uses the octavina and the banduria, Filipino traditional
stringed instruments, to deliver catchy pop melodies and jazz chord
progressions within a rock framework.
7:45 pm - Phuz
Fresh off the national circuit with Sade's Lover's Rock Tour and the release
of their second cd, Houston's own Phuz has been garnering critical praise.
Nominated in the Houston Press Music Awards as Best Funk/R&B, Phuz is
described as "cool-school jazz/European-style ambient funk music that
wouldn't sound out of place in a Paris bistro or a Berlin cafe."
7:20 pm - The Dread-I-Knight and Lady Pinay
Well-established in the LA underground artist community, the duet
Dread-I-Knight and Lady Pinay embark on a soulful emotional journey with
violin, guitar, rap and beat box.
7:00 pm - Malaya
The Malaya Music and Dance Collective from San Francisco integrates Filipino
and other Southeast Asian traditional dance with modern elements, presenting
a wide range of ethnic instrumentation from the region and beyond.
6:35 pm - East Babylon Symphony
Led by modern Filipino composer Eugene Baylon Jaceldo from Carigara, Leyte
and joined by three of his brothers, the repertoire of Austin-based East
Babylon Symphony includes a melange of traditions ranging from indigenous
Filipino influences to classical African-American music.
6:15 pm - kayumanggi
A Pinoy rock band with a Philippine-centric socio-cultural focus led by
songwriter Kokoy Severino from Manila, kayumanggi's Tagalog lyrics explore
issues crucial in one's search for a Filipino identity, such as the painful
longing for the homeland, the political violence that permeates Philippine
society, and the enigma of nationalism. Described in Dirty Linen Folk and
World Music Magazine (Baltimore MD) as "obliquely political and colorfully
poetic."
5:50 pm - rodSUN
Modern rock band rodSUN has been busy on the local college circuit and is
being hailed as the next act from Houston to be established on the Pinoy rock
map.
