Promoting Cultural Literacy and Interaction on the Internet

The development of the Internet made it possible for individuals, artists and organizations to publish information, and develop ideas and materials at a more frequent rate than conventional publishing. The earliest access to the Internet enabled us to research a handful of individuals' accounts of travel in Mexico and to promote our Lost Dutchman travel series Expediciones Fotogrficas de las Barrancas y los Rios. We quickly moved toward promoting cultural literacy as the greater purpose of our website.

For World Music Show listeners, we posted listings of local and regional cultural events, and Native American powwows. The site proved very popular, attracting visitors from more than 30 countries and aiding elementary school teachers in providing students with fun, educational materials about regional culture.

The establishment of our website has allowed us cost-effective communication with people around the world. We respond to topical questions ranging from historic ethnic communities in Texas to acceptable practices for international business meetings in Houston's multi-cultural environment.

For further information, see the Our Goals and Things to Do, and consider the many ways you can interact with the Houston Institute for Culture.
