Reporting on Houston's Eclectic Music, Film and Art Scene
While in college Mark Lacy reported on entertainment as an editor for the university newspaper. He focused on coverage for independent musicians and artists, and international films. Like many college radio DJs and entertainment reporters, he believed college and alternative media is critical to expose the public to artists and cultures typically under-represented in commercial media.
Lacy additionally worked in university promotion, where he met Nobel Peace Prize recipient Rigoberta Menchu and developed an interest in her advocacy for indigenous cultures. Experience at the university exposed him to world leaders, scientists and innovators, including former Costa Rican president Oscar Arias Sanchez, former Soviet cosmonaut Valentin Lebedev, health advocate Linus Pauling and legendary head coach Tom Landry.
