Youth Development and Student Digital Story Projects

Today's youth need to be prepared to solve many problems in the future. Digital storytelling gives students the communication tools they need to inform and inspire others as they face the world's increasing challenges.

Sophia, a Houston middle school student who is participating in our digital storytelling and youth development programs, produced a public service message to tell others about something she cares about greatly - her home country of Haiti. Sophia is a student at the Havens Center, one of the locations where Houston Institute for Culture works with youth to develop future civic and community leaders.

You can view the public service message by downloading it as a Windows Media Video file, or see it as a Flash video on our MySpace page, where you can get the code to post it to your own or share with others.

Sophia's script is provided below:

Hi, my name is Sophia. I lived in Haiti for 12 years. Haiti is a beautiful country with a great culture, but it's getting bad because kids are dying in the streets, kids are drinking bad water, kids don't go to school, and they're begging for a change. But with your help you can make a difference to make a smile on their faces. Please see the National Haitian American Health Alliance at NHAHA.org.

Latest News: Sophia has been asked to appear on the KPFT radio shows and even received an invitation to speak for a Haiti health orgaization in New York. She is creating a student organization and recruiting volunteers. Her website is: Haiticounts.org
