Houston Institute for Culture offers internships and volunteer opportunities for area students. The volunteer positions provide valuable experience in academic fields: education, social sciences, social services, history, business, political science, and more. Some positions offer opportunities for travel. Interested students should contact Mark Lacy (at mark@houstonculture.org) for more information. Students receiving course credit must attend training and evaluation meetings, and keep a log of their activities. Some internships are paid through grants, while others are not. Paid internships typically start on exact schedules that often mirror university semester schedules.


Digital Storytelling Workshop Facilitator
Currently 2 paid postions are offered; notices will be posted in August 2008.
Responsibilities: Present workshops for grade school and middle school children to develop their ideas as digital stories; facilitate the students' work to completion and presentation for peer groups. For more information about this activity, please see:

Community Resources Editor
Responsibilities: Identify and compile cultural and community resources in southeast Texas or south Louisiana (as well as impact of recent hurricanes on the agencies, parks, community centers, etc.) for presentation on the Internet. Please contact us for more information about this activity.

Camp Dos Cabezas Youth Coordinator
Camp Dos Cabezas provides at-risk children with the experience of a lifetime to help them achieve success in their lives. There are many opportunities to work with camp participants in Houston or Arizona, and internship possibilities in camp planning. For more information, please see:

Community Advocacy Media Director
Responsibilities: Develop a strategic network of radio stations in Texas for placement of public service announcements aimed at helping people better understand the economics of their communities. Please contact us for more information about this activity.

Community Advocacy Education Director
Responsibilities: Develop a strategic network of middle school teachers in Texas for implementation of Kids Community Voices writing exercises for the advocacy campaign Positive Action for Texas Communities. Please contact us for more information about this activity.

Border Issues Researcher
Responsibilities: Research and identify the foundation of Colonia 21 de Marzo (March 21 Colony) in Reynosa, Tamaulipas, Mexico; present a summary of the colonia's history for presentation on the Internet; prepare information gathered for archives.
