Researching and Writing the Cultural History of the Region: The Life and Times of Adolf Trojan

Travels closer to home in southeast Texas led to the many colorful Czech festivals and Mexican celebrations. Mark Lacy's fictional character Adolf Trojan was inspired by historical events that affected the large population of immigrants in Texas. The popular Texas band leader and musician, Adolph Hofner changed his name during World War II to avoid persecution, as his name was similar to Adolf Hitler. Many immigrants, such as Slavic people with lengthy names like Trojanovich, often shortened their names to blend with others.

Many interesting cultural connections, such as Black Indians and the Cherokee queen of a Czech festival in Prague, Oklahoma, inspired further investigation. The on-going research will serve as a cultural history of integration in the region.
