Organization Musicians Benevolent Society of Houston (MBS)

Category Advocacy/Financial Support for Houston Musicians

Description The Musicians Benevolent Society of Houston (MBS) was established in 1990 as a tax-exempt 501c3 Texas corporation to provide up to $1,000 in temporary, emergency financial assistance to musicians in need.

MBS has made gifts in the blues, jazz, classical, rock and Texas music communities in the greater Houston area. Assistance through October 2006 totals more than $63,000 impacting 175 musicians and their families.

This all-volunteer organization is governed by a seven-member board of directors and runs on individual and corporate donations ranging from $25 to $1,500. In-kind corporate support has ranged as high as $5,000.

MBS does not make cash gifts to musicians. Bank drafts are sent directly to a payee, which ensures accountability and maximum impact of the gift. Common forms of assistance include mortgage or rent payments, utility bills, medical insurance deductibles, non-covered medical expenses, special health needs and equipment rentals, prescription medicines, doctors' bills, end-of-life care and funeral expenses. These are one-time, non-recurring gifts.

Referrals for assistance are by word of mouth. All transactions are made in confidence to protect the musician's and the family's privacy.

To make a tax-deductible gift to the Musicians Benevolent Society, please make checks payable to MBS and mail to the address below.
