Organization Inprint

Category Literary Organizations

Description Inprint, Inc. is Houston's only major nonprofit organization dedicated to that "shimmering go between," the literary arts. Founded in 1983 by a group of community volunteers and writers from the University of Houston Creative Writing Program, Inprint champions creative writing and reading in Houston. Its programs and events play a vital role in Houston's rich cultural life.

Inprint has also brought to town hundreds of great writers, including several Nobel and Pulitzer Prize winners and major African American, Asian American, and Hispanic authors

Events and
Traditions
The Margarett Root Brown Houston Reading Series, now in its 23rd year and presented in association with the UH Creative Writing Program and the Alley Theatre, brings the world's leading writers to Houston at little or no cost to the public.

Classes and
Workshops
Inprint Writers Workshops are considered Houston's "Best Place for Aspiring Writers" (Houston Press Best of 2002) and led by accomplished local authors in fiction, poetry, personal essay, and the novel, help aspiring writers to hone their skills and prepare work for publication.

The Business of Writing is a low-cost, one-day seminar for aspiring writers that features nationally renowned editors, agents, writers, and other publishing experts, conducted every other year.

A year-round Third Ward Creative Writing Residency at SHAPE Community Center provides after-school classes and activities for children from the surrounding community.

Teachers as Writers Workshops fill a gap in teacher training, providing poetry, fiction, and nonfiction workshops that sharpen the writing skills of K-12 teachers from Houston-area schools.

Memoir Workshops for senior citizens at Finnigan Park and the Jewish Community Center revive memories, preserve histories, and join the seniors in intergenerational writing projects with 3rd and 4th grade children at nearby schools.

Additional
Information
Each year, The Poets and Writers Ball provides nearly $100,000 in fellowships and other assistance to the renowned UH Creative Writing Program, the heart of Houston's literary life. Inprint has given more than $1 million in support to the Program since 1983.

Funds raised at the Ball also enable Inprint to serve Houston through programs such as writing projects that join senior citizens and 4th graders, special writers workshops for school teachers, and a writer in residence at SHAPE Community Center.
