The spicy and crisp Sauvignon Blanc is a perfect companion for the flavorful foods of summer, such as crawfish and zesty barbecue sauces. Because it is not a sweet wine, the Sauvignon Blanc is perfect for a long night of sipping wine with friends.

Haak's Chardonnay is a fruity dessert wine. Banana is the first scent to greet your nose and pallet. While the flavor of the Chardonnay lingers longer on the pallet than the Sauvignon Blanc, it is pleasant and lacking any bitter aftertaste. The Chardonnay is a complement to white sauces and oriental foods, or better yet, as an after-meal dessert.

Due to the time required to properly age the wine, the red wines and the barrel-fermented Chardonnay will not be available until the autumn.

The process of producing wine is long and arduous. Grapvines require several years to mature and the attention and effort involved in nurturing the grapes is a never-ending process. Once the grapes are ready for harvest, work begins in earnest.


  

Using state-of-the-art equipment, and the labor of neighbors and friends, the grapes are hand-picked, crushed, fermented and bottled in the autumn.

"They work hard and they are happy to do it because they know their reward is going to be wine," said Denise Williams, tour guide at Haak Winery and Vineyard.

Texans spend more than $500 million a year on wine and only 5 percent of that is wine produced in Texas, according to Texas Agriculture Commissioner Susan Combs.

Haak is hoping Texans will realize that wines from local wineries are as fine a quality as their Californian competitors.

"I really enjoy creating premium wines that others enjoy," Haak said. "It is like creating a work of art that brings pleasure to others."
