Cultural Arts and Activities Center Benefits
Houston has a fair amount of cultural and community arts activity, but to fully realize the educational and quality of life benefits of our diverse voices, more is always needed. Much of this valuable activity is lost due to lack of resources and logistical problems community organizations often face. The Cultural Arts and Activities Center will help increase these activities in Houston and, ultimately, increase the number of Houstonians and visitors who participate in cultural arts all over the city by raising awareness and generating more public interest in diverse cultures and ideas.
The Cultural Arts and Activities Center will provide a hub for cultural activity in Houston:
• A place for cultural and community organizations to hold meetings, and operate volunteer recruitment and fundraising campaigns.
• A performance space for music and dance recitals, as well as forums and community discussions, with studios for Houston musicians to rehearse and a reception hall that can be used for book signings.
• A place for Houstonians and out-of-town guests to learn about the city's cultural arts community -- a place where there is constant activity to experience and an informative origination point to begin a well informed cultural arts tour of the city.
• An exhibit center with a permanent educational display about our region's cultural history and diversity, as well as additional exhibit spaces for Houston's cultural organizations to show art or educational materials.
• A common grounds for student organizations from area universities to cosponsor events open to all students, allowing the sponsors to reach wider audiences for high profile events.
• Outdoor spaces for small cultural festivals and displays of artwork created by independent cultural artists, with gardens and plazas representing different cultures.
• A music venue for live bands and recorded music, featuring theme nights to expose audiences to regional cultural and international genres, and a vendor space where organizations can provide audiences with cultural foods.
• A resource center offering information and services to citizens interested in producing cultural arts and educational events, with space for seminars and workshops to aid artists and organizations.
